Your Business: If it isn’t broken, break it, and fix it stronger!
Before Covid I was working with a couple of businesses. One a school photographer, one a trainer.
The photographer was reluctant to change his business model and move some of his team onto different contracts, despite losing money for nine months of the year. “They would leave and I’d have no business.”
The trainer had convinced herself that “my clients want face to face only, online won’t work!”.
Both changes were then forced upon them due to lockdown, and both business flourished as a result. Funny that.
Cue rolling of eyes and me muttering under my breath “I told you so”.
In the current climate, it’s tough out there and it’s easy to get caught up in momentum.
Revenue is holding up, the team is expanding, and opportunities are flying in. But beneath all that success lies a silent threat: the temptation to delay hard decisions until you’re forced to make them.
Some say, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” My old boss said, and now I say, “If it isn’t broken, break it, then fix it stronger.”
Because in a fast-growing, dynamic business, what works today can quietly become what holds you back tomorrow.
Whether it’s letting go of underperforming team members, shifting your business model, or overhauling your marketing strategy, waiting until the pressure forces your hand turns smart, strategic decisions into rushed, reactive ones.
And when the stakes are high, reacting in crisis rarely leads to the best outcomes.
Proactive leaders understand this. They don’t wait for cracks to appear, they stress-test their business constantly, especially now. They’re willing to challenge the status quo, even when things feel fine, because they know staying comfortable is the biggest risk of all.
Cutting ties with someone who’s no longer the right fit. Killing a product or service that’s underperforming. Saying no to legacy revenue that’s draining resources.
These aren’t easy calls. But the longer you delay, the messier the consequences.
The pace of growth amplifies everything – the good and the bad. Every inefficiency, misalignment, or ignored red flag multiplies as your business scales.
If you want to grow with control, you have to lead the change.
Here are four ways to start taking back that control today:
- Audit your team: Who’s no longer aligned with where the business is going? Who is causing you a headache? Start having honest conversations now
- Pressure-test your business model: Is it still built for where you’re headed, or just where you’ve been? Is it future proof?
- Refresh your marketing playbook: What’s working today may not fuel your next phase of growth. Don’t wait until leads dry up – get on the front foot.
- Schedule quarterly “break it” reviews: Challenge one thing each quarter that’s working, break it and make it stronger
Growth doesn’t wait for comfort. And control doesn’t come from reacting, it comes from choosing to evolve early and often.
Break it. Fix it stronger. Grow smarter.
